Day 1: Cusco - Lodge-in-Kosñipata
On the first day of our adventure in the Manu Jungle, we will pick you up around 5:30 AM from your hotels in Cusco, using the service of our private transportation. The first part of our excursion will take us through the majestic Andean mountains. Then, we will visit the town of Huancarani which contains the funerary towers of Ninamarca, a cemetery of the Pre-Inca Lupaca Culture, which we will visit briefly on our way to Paucartambo, which is known as the folklore capital of the Cusco district. Faced with modern times, this small colonial town has managed to maintain its rich tradition for centuries and centuries. At noon we will arrive at the entrance to the Manu National Park and access one of the most protected natural areas in South America. We will continue in our private transportation along a dirt road and through the thick fog from which this section of the jungle takes its name. Finally we will arrive at the home of the exotic Peruvian national bird, the "Cock of the Rocks", where it is known to gather with others of its species for a kind of social gathering that seems reminiscent of a grand courtship. It is an amazing spectacle complete with an impressive range of sounds and colors that can only be found in the jungle. The first night we will stay in the beautiful Lodge, where we will arrive at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Day 2: Lodge in-Kosñipata - Zona Reservada - Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
This morning from the clear waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River we will enter the clay-laden waters of the Manu River, after leaving our lodge at 3:30am we will head towards the Port of Atalaya and from there we will continue our trip by boat and from there we will sail directly to the Reserved Zone of the Manu Park. With a brief stop at the ranger station in Limonal to present our permits, we will travel for about five hours along the Manu. The beaches, especially in the dry season, are filled with nesting and feeding birds such as herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, terns and skimmers, to name a few. Some beaches are home to black and white alligators (South American relatives of alligators) and side-necked turtles. Hundreds of sand-colored nightjars roost during the day on logs and beaches, and there is a chance of encountering a sunbathing jaguar, the third largest cat in the world. In 1999 one in three of our trips saw jaguars in Manu. We will see some species of primates on this river trip, possibly red howler monkeys or the smaller squirrel monkeys. After having lunch next to the river we will arrive at our Safari Camp near Cocha Salvador Lake. We will have the afternoon to explore some of the trails through the area's pristine rainforest. A visit to Cocha Otorongo Lake is planned, where there are observation docks and a 20-meter observation tower in the rainforest canopy overlooking the lake for wildlife viewing. We will also be on the lookout for a large family of giant otters that inhabit this lake. Before or after dinner, you can take an optional excursion into the forest at night with your guide in search of nocturnal creatures. The lakes are filled with the bright eyes of the large Black Cayman and if we are lucky we may encounter an Olingo Kinkajou or even an Ocelot on the trails. Certainly, the nighttime noise of tree frogs and forest insects is an experience not to be forgotten. At night, at the Casa Matshiguenka lodge, there are flushing toilets and showers. We will navigate the Manu River, along the river we will have the opportunity to see several species of animals including black caimans, white caimans, turtles, monkeys, capybaras and deer. The sound of red howler monkeys through the fog can make your skin crawl. Right after seeing the giant otters in the Salvador pond we will go back to the Lodge and from there we will walk about 30 minutes to a Macaw Clay Lick. (In this clay lick you can see red and green macaws and scarlet macaws). Around 10:00 a.m. The macaws begin to descend. What will the weather be like on a Choquequirao trek?
The Andean weather can be unpredictable, despite the sharp divide between dry and wet seasons. The dry season runs from May to October or November; the rainy season goes from December through to April. Nevertheless, Choquequirao lies in the forested fringes of the Amazon basin, where showers can occur at any time of year. Therefore, even in the “dry” season, your daypack should always include full rain gear (both jacket AND trousers). Daytime temperatures can vary greatly, with daytime highs ranging from 10ºC/50ºF to 32ºC/90ºF, and night-time lows ranging from 10ºC/50ºF to a cold 4ºC/40ºF, though seldom much lower. The floor of the Apurimac Canyon gets very hot during the day. Bring your swimsuit for a delicious dip in the river.
What's the most difficult section?
We expected the 1800+m (ft) climb from the Apurimac River up to Choquequirao to be excruciating.Yet for us it did not seem difficult. (Perhaps it was the excitement of finally arriving at the ruins.) If you hike one of the longer routes, the day following your visit to Choquequirao may well be the most difficult.
What footwear is best for Choquequirao?
You want to wear what fits you best and what works for you. No blisters! Most experts recommend hiking boots: A pair of good boots and gaiters will make you feel invincible in the mud, with modern boots being remarkably light and comfortable. Some muleteers, by the way, hike in recycled-tyre sandals!
Will I have problems with altitude sickness on this tour?
Altitude sickness can catch many travellers a little bit off guard. Not everyone gets sick in high altitudes, and it is difficult to predict who is likely to be badly affected by it. For most people, it is nothing more than a headache and a dizzy sensation that diminishes over a short period of time, 1 to 2 days for most people. If you want to limit your chances of getting sick, there are a few things you can do. Firstly, do not fly directly into high altitude - proceed slowly, allowing your body time to acclimatise as you ascend gradually. However, for many that is not possible, so it’s important to drink lots of water, and to slow down! This sounds simple, but both of these things are very important. Your body is struggling because you don’t have enough oxygen, so avoiding any strenuous activity is a good idea. Chew some coca leaves - the native people of South America have been chewing coca for centuries, thanks to its ability to alleviate mild altitude sickness symptoms. Coca leaves can be bought in any supermarket, and even souvenir shops or street stalls. Take altitude sickness pills (Soroche): these are sold over the counter all over Peru, and are just a few dollars.
