Day 1: Cusco – Amazon Pona Lodge (Cloud & Fog Forest Exploration)
The adventure kicks off bright and early at 5:00 AM with a private pickup from your hotel in Cusco, courtesy of Amazon Tours Peru. Our first destination is the Pre-Inca burial towers of Ninamarca, a fascinating archaeological site that showcases the rich history of the Andes.

Next, we’ll journey through the stunning Andean mountains to Tres Cruces, the highest point and main gateway to Manu National Park, one of South America’s most treasured natural areas. From this vantage point, we’ll begin our descent into the Cloud Forest, also known as the Fog Forest, where we’ll spend about four hours wandering the trails.

During this immersive rainforest hike, you’ll have the chance to:
- Spot the Peruvian national bird, the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, in its natural lek
- Catch a glimpse of woolly monkeys, the largest primates in Peru
- Discover the amazing variety of bromeliads, orchids, and other unique plants

As the afternoon winds down, we’ll arrive at Amazon Pona Lodge, a charming rustic retreat where comfort meets nature. Before dinner, you can join an optional night walk to experience the enchanting sights and sounds of the rainforest after dark, all while wearing rubber boots for safety.

Day 2: Amazon Pona Lodge – Manu River – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
The day starts very early at 5:00 AM, departing towards the Port of Atalaya. Upon arrival at the small village, we board a motorized canoe to navigate the fast-flowing Alto Madre de Dios River. Life jackets and all equipment are provided for a safe and comfortable ride. From here, we enter the clay-laden waters of the Manu River, entering the Manu National Park Reserved Zone, a hotspot for wildlife observation in the Amazon rainforest.

We make a brief stop at the Limonal Ranger Station to present our permits before continuing our river journey. During the boat trip, especially in the dry season, the riverbanks and beaches are alive with wildlife, offering the chance to see:
White caimans and black caimans basking in the sun
Side-necked turtles along the riverbanks
Possibly a jaguar sunning itself on the beach (the world’s third-largest cat) or tapirs crossing the river, the largest mammal in the Amazon
Various species of primates, including spider monkeys, red howler monkeys, and squirrel monkeys

After enjoying lunch by the river, we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, a rustic, native-owned lodge run by the Matsiguenka community, featuring its own network of rainforest trails. In the afternoon, we explore the pristine jungle trails, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife photography, and nature observation.

Before or after dinner, guests can join an optional guided night walk, searching for nocturnal rainforest creatures, including frogs, insects, and small mammals. The lodge offers comfortable twin rooms with mosquito nets, flush toilets, and hot showers, ensuring a balance of comfort and immersion in the jungle.

Day 3: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Macaw Clay Lick – Salvador Lake – Cocha Otorongo
We begin the day early in the morning with a visit to the Macaw Clay Lick, a spectacular natural site where flocks of macaws, parrots, and parakeets gather daily to feed on the mineral-rich clay walls along a small river. Guests observe the birds from a camouflaged hide, allowing for unobtrusive wildlife photography and close-up viewing. Note that this activity is weather-dependent, as rain can affect animal activity.

After a hearty breakfast, we visit Salvador Lake, one of the largest lakes in Manu National Park and a prime wildlife hotspot. This pristine habitat is home to giant river otters, the largest freshwater carnivores in the world, and black caimans, both of which are endangered species. This rare opportunity allows travelers to observe these magnificent animals in their natural environment, far from captivity.

Following lunch, we trek through the primary Amazon rainforest to Cocha Otorongo Lake, where a 20-meter observation tower provides panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and lake. From this vantage point, we may spot giant otters, caimans, and various bird species, while our expert guide offers in-depth explanations about Amazonian flora and fauna, ecosystem interactions, and rainforest symbiosis. Along the trails, there is also a chance to encounter groups of peccaries.

The day concludes with a stunning Amazonian sunset before returning to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge for the night.

We then continue upriver along the Alto Madre de Dios River toward the Shipetiari Ecological Reserve, a remote section of the Manu rainforest known for its incredible biodiversity.

Upon arrival at Teparo Lodge, guests can relax and enjoy the peaceful Amazonian surroundings. In the evening, we gather around a campfire, share stories of the day’s wildlife sightings, and enjoy drinks while immersed in the sounds of the jungle. After breakfast at Teparo Lodge, there is time for a short morning walk to observe the jungle awakening, with the sounds of birds, insects, and other wildlife signaling the start of a new day. This is an ideal moment to spot early-rising creatures such as monkeys, toucans, parrots, or even riverbank mammals.

After savoring the last moments of the Manu Reserve, we board our motorized boat and travel down the Manu River to Atalaya, taking in the stunning scenery of the riverbanks, flooded forests, and abundant wildlife along the way. This journey offers one final chance to see giant river otters, caimans, and a variety of tropical birds, making it a memorable conclusion to our Amazon adventure.

Upon arrival at Atalaya, our private van awaits to begin the overland journey back to Cusco. What will the weather be like on a Choquequirao trek?
The Andean weather can be unpredictable, despite the sharp divide between dry and wet seasons. The dry season runs from May to October or November; the rainy season goes from December through to April. Nevertheless, Choquequirao lies in the forested fringes of the Amazon basin, where showers can occur at any time of year. Therefore, even in the “dry” season, your daypack should always include full rain gear (both jacket AND trousers). Daytime temperatures can vary greatly, with daytime highs ranging from 10ºC/50ºF to 32ºC/90ºF, and night-time lows ranging from 10ºC/50ºF to a cold 4ºC/40ºF, though seldom much lower. The floor of the Apurimac Canyon gets very hot during the day. Bring your swimsuit for a delicious dip in the river.
What's the most difficult section?
We expected the 1800+m (ft) climb from the Apurimac River up to Choquequirao to be excruciating.Yet for us it did not seem difficult. (Perhaps it was the excitement of finally arriving at the ruins.) If you hike one of the longer routes, the day following your visit to Choquequirao may well be the most difficult.
What footwear is best for Choquequirao?
You want to wear what fits you best and what works for you. No blisters! Most experts recommend hiking boots: A pair of good boots and gaiters will make you feel invincible in the mud, with modern boots being remarkably light and comfortable. Some muleteers, by the way, hike in recycled-tyre sandals!
Will I have problems with altitude sickness on this tour?
Altitude sickness can catch many travellers a little bit off guard. Not everyone gets sick in high altitudes, and it is difficult to predict who is likely to be badly affected by it. For most people, it is nothing more than a headache and a dizzy sensation that diminishes over a short period of time, 1 to 2 days for most people. If you want to limit your chances of getting sick, there are a few things you can do. Firstly, do not fly directly into high altitude - proceed slowly, allowing your body time to acclimatise as you ascend gradually. However, for many that is not possible, so it’s important to drink lots of water, and to slow down! This sounds simple, but both of these things are very important. Your body is struggling because you don’t have enough oxygen, so avoiding any strenuous activity is a good idea. Chew some coca leaves - the native people of South America have been chewing coca for centuries, thanks to its ability to alleviate mild altitude sickness symptoms. Coca leaves can be bought in any supermarket, and even souvenir shops or street stalls. Take altitude sickness pills (Soroche): these are sold over the counter all over Peru, and are just a few dollars.
